Jazz Northwest Sunday’s at 1:00pm
Every Sunday afternoon at 1:00, world-famous jazz host, Jim Wilke, takes you inside the vibrant Northwest jazz community with live performances, interviews and a broad spectrum of recordings from the finest jazz musicians in the Puget Sound area. Jim is a long-time Seattle resident, a respected teacher of jazz history, an award-winning broadcaster and a first-rate recording engineer, all of which makes him uniquely qualified to take you on a weekly trip into one of America’s most exciting jazz scenes, a scene which Jim, himself, has helped to create: Jazz Northwest.
Saturday Jazz Matinee 1:00pm – 6:00pm
For most KPLU listeners, Saturday is a day of activity, whether it consists of catching up on household chores, catching up with friends or just getting ‘out and about’ on a Saturday afternoon. Saturday Jazz Matinee, hosted by Ruby Brown, is designed to provide accompaniment to your active Saturday with great jazz and good company. Ruby keeps the jazz bright and upbeat and, just in case you find yourself with time on your hands, you can always count on her to have a lot of information about weekend events going on the community.
Sunday Side Up 9:10am – 1:00pm
On Sunday mornings you get to sleep a little later, wake up a little slower and, in general, treat yourself to a little pampering. When you get to the ‘pampering’ stage, that’s where Sunday Side Up with Ruby Brown comes in. Sunday Side Up consists of four hours of laid-back, luxurious jazz, guaranteed to enhance your Sunday morning pampering routine. Whether you’re lingering over the crossword puzzle in the Sunday paper or creating a hollandaise sauce for your Sunday brunch, you’ll find Sunday Side Up to be the perfect soundtrack.
All Blues Saturdays & Sundays 6:00pm – 12:00am
Every Saturday and Sunday night, KPLU throws a blues party; All Blues, hosted by John Kessler. For a full six hours each evening, John draws from the full spectrum of the blues in his award-winning shows. You’ll heard classic blues recordings from such legends as Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf and Sonny Boy Williamson. You’ll also hear great r&b, soul, funk, swamp, gospel and boogie-woogie blues from all over America and all around the world. Add to that a healthy dose of the best tracks from the latest blues CD releases and you’ve got it: All Blues every Saturday and Sunday night….because, like the aforementioned Wolf, we all gotta howl sometime.
The Art Of Jazz Sunday’s 3:00pm – 6:00pm Ken Wiley, host of The Art Of Jazz, has one of the most extensive private jazz record collections in the world. On Sunday afternoons from 3-6, Ken dips into his vast library of original 78rpm and LP recordings and provides us with the unique opportunity to hear a broad spectrum of jazz, from the classic to the obscure, played from the original source material. A retired educator, Ken is also a scholar (primarily of Ellingtonia), a poet and a musician. Every Sunday he brings all these sensibilities to bear as he presents one of the most unique shows on public radio, The Art Of Jazz.
