Nearly two years ago, heavy snow and ice from an unusual mid-December storm and cold snap left roads and sidewalks treacherous for a week or more. Road and transit agencies in Seattle say the hard lessons they learned during the big snowstorm of 2008 are showing up in their response to this snowfall.

I-5 express lanes in Seattle to remain open southbound through evening commute

The Washington State Department of Transportation has decided to keep the I-5 express lanes open in the southbound direction through Tuesday afternoon.

In certain snow and ice conditions WSDOT leaves these lanes open during normally scheduled closures to prevent ice and snow accumulation. Drivers headed in the northbound direction through downtown Seattle should plan accordingly. 

Updated traffic conditions are available on the WSDOT website

Metro buses will be running on snow routes Monday. It's a precautionary measure due to the threat of snow. The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory, warning of possible snow accumulations during the day on Monday of one to three inches from southwest Washington northward, perhaps as far as Seattle and Everett.

Deep freeze, snow showers visit western Washington

Western Washington is experiencing its coldest temperatures of the season, and it's about to get a lot colder.

The National Weather Service in Seattle has issued a winter weather advisory for much of the state through Monday night. Southwest Washington's interior, through Olympia and perhaps as far north as Seattle, could see snow accumulations of 1 to 3 inches through Monday evening. That's when a second cold front is expected.
