Northwest potato farmers are cheering a small provision tucked into the newly passed federal spending package.

The Women, Infants and Children or WIC program provides modest monthly vouchers for a variety of foods. They’ll cover any vegetable except “white potatoes.”

Northwest potato growers say they've been snubbed in a federal nutrition program. The U.S. Department of Agriculture on Friday finalized changes to the Women, Infants and Children program, or WIC. And it will cover all fruits and veggies — all but potatoes.

At least 82 King County workers have received advance layoff notices as a result of the partial federal government shutdown. The workers administer food assistance to women, infants, and children through the program known as WIC. That food aid is in jeopardy as the shutdown continues.
