Mass: Chances Of Snow This Weekend, But Don't Bet The House On It

The weekend forecast includes chances of snow, but nothing's for certain, says KPLU weather expert Cliff Mass.

"This is a hard one," said Mass. “There’s a lot of uncertainty here. I’ll tell you that right in the beginning.”

Mass: Soak Up The Sun This Weekend Before Ridge Begins To Shift

Tim Durkan

Start planning your weekend. The forecast looks sunny, dry and warm, says KPLU weather expert Cliff Mass.

“Temperatures in the lowlands will reach lower 50s in some places. And some spots along the coast might even see lower 60s,” said Mass, who teaches atmospheric sciences at the University of Washington.

No Rain in the Forecast This Week, but More Fog, Afternoon Sun

Keith Seinfeld

The very dense fog hanging around the region this morning bodes well for a long sunny day ahead, and the week will continue with that pattern, says KPLU weather expert Cliff Mass.

“As I mentioned before, that’s a tremendously good sign,” said Mass, who teaches Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Washington. He says the densest fog usually means the sunniest afternoons.

“The clouds, the cold air, that low foggy layer is actually very shallow today and I expect it to burn out much quicker than it has in the past,” he said, predicting that it should be completely sunny outside by 11 this morning, with temperatures going up to around 60.

Sunshine! Then some rain, and then ... more changes

rishibando Flickr

Just one day of glory is all we get, says KPLU weather expert Cliff Mass. The clouds roll in tonight, at least around most of western Washington, followed by periods of rain tomorrow.

The sun will still be shining over Portland on Saturday, and east of the Cascades, says Mass, a UW professor of Atmospheric Sciences.

The changes are all typical of June, he says, and by the middle of next week, we'll likely flip back to a few days of sunshine.

This week's interview also covers how to "read" the clouds and tell if rain is on the way.

Rain, rain and more in the forecast - but, embrace the weather and you'll be fine

Count the raindrops, go Singing in the Rain, or join the "surface data revolution" to beat the winter blues. It will be rainy, cold and stormy in the week ahead.

"It was like Palm Springs around much of the Northwest" recently, says KPLU's weather man, Cliff Mass. But that will be shifting soon.

"Unfortunately, we're about to make a major shift into a much rainier pattern - a much more normal pattern."

It may be drying out this weekend and into next week ... but this past week brought some serious rain.

Cliff Mass is out to popularize the science of weather forecasting

Cliff Mass, a professor of atmospheric sciences at the University of Washington and KPLU’s new weather commentator, says it was Carl Sagan who first inspired him to get out into the public to popularize the science behind weather forecasting.

“I was an undergraduate at Cornell and in those days he was really into popularizing science. He was on the Tonight Show, and he was writing very popular books and a lot of that rubbed off,” Mass told KPLU.
