The unranked Washington Huskies take on the No. 9 Oregon Ducks Saturday in Eugene. The Ducks are heavily favored to win, as they have the past 10 years.

But the Huskies may be able to turn their luck around this year with the help of a man known as “the mad scientist.”

The University of Washington football team opens its 2014 season on Aug. 30 in Hawaii. The Huskies are coming off a successful, 9-4 season last year, and they have a promising new coach. But they also have a bit of a quarterback controversy, says sports commentator Art Thiel.

University of Washington

The University of Washington has announced that Boise State’s Chris Petersen will be the Huskies’ next football coach. Petersen leaves Idaho after 13 years, during eight of which he served as the Broncos' head coach.

Washington made the announcement official with a press release Friday morning. It marked the end of the first successful effort to lure Petersen out of Idaho. His name had been linked to numerous other jobs the last few years. Two undefeated seasons and three national coach of the year awards helped raise his stock nationally.

Tributes are planned this weekend for legendary University of Washington football coach Don James. He died last Sunday from pancreatic cancer at the age of 80. James coached the Huskies from 1975 until 1992, leading them to six conference titles and a share of the 1991 national championship.

The Husky marching band will perform a special tribute to James during halftime of Saturday night’s game against California at Husky Stadium. A public memorial service is planned for 3 p.m. Sunday at Hec Edmundson Pavilion on the UW campus.

KPLU sports commentator Art Thiel says Don James will be remembered for what he taught players on the field, and off.

The Washington Huskies host the Oregon Ducks Saturday in a highly-anticipated game. It begins at 1 p.m. at Husky Stadium in Seattle, but fans will be gathering well before that, with cable station ESPN featuring the matchup in their weekly “College GameDay” program—a first for Washington.

KPLU sports commentator Art Thiel says this year, the game is more than just a regional rivalry; it’s a matchup between two nationally-ranked teams.

The Washington Huskies begin the 2012 football season Saturday night against San Diego State. UW will face four Top 20 teams in the first six weeks of the season.

KPLU sports commentator Art Thiel says a tough schedule is not the only obstacle the Huskies face this year.

After an embarrassing 67-56 loss to Baylor in the Alamo Bowl, the Washington Huskies have made big changes to their defensive coaching staff. Defensive coordinator Nick Holt was fired, along with the team's linebackers and safeties coaches.

Two coaches with ties to the Northwest were hired from Tennessee. But will it be enough to help the Huskies face what promises to be a very tough schedule in 2012?

Being part of the highest-scoring bowl game in history was hardly a distinction for University of Washington defensive coordinator Nick Holt.

The 67-56 loss to Baylor in the Alamo Bowl was the last in a series of defensive flops that cost him his job.

After a 5-1 start, the Washington Huskies are now 6-4 heading into Saturday's game against Oregon State.

OSU is 2-8. But KPLU sports commentator Art Thiel says that appears to be little comfort to the Huskies and their fans, who are more apprehensive than normal about this game.

After a promising start, the Washington Huskies have lost three of their last four games. And now it looks like they've lost their starting quarterback to a sprained knee. Keith Price was injured in last weekend's loss to USC.

It's not official yet, but it looks like freshman backup quarterback Nick Montana will get his first career start on Saturday against Oregon State.

The Washington Huskies play one of the best teams in the country on Saturday – the Stanford Cardinal and their star quarterback Andrew Luck. KPLU sports commentator Art Thiel says this is one of the most significant games UW has played in a decade.
