OLYMPIA - Washington Governor Chris Gregoire is emerging as an unlikely gay rights activist - both at home and on the national stage. Her role in helping pass a same-sex marriage law this year has made Gregoire a sought-after spokesperson for the movement.

OLYMPIA, Wash – Northwest gay rights supporters are cheering President Obama’s comments that he thinks same sex couples should be able to marry. But organizers of a petition drive to repeal Washington’s new marriage equality law hope to capitalize on the President’s new stance.

A group that opposes same-sex marriage is taking its boycott of Starbucks to the other side of the world.

A coalition of supporters for same-sex marriage delivered a giant “thank-you” card to Starbucks headquarters in Seattle yesterday with more than 650,000 signatures.

The group said dozens of supporters were on hand to deliver the card to representatives of Starbucks.

James Olson, Starbucks’ VP of Global Corporate Communications, greeted the group and received the card and said, as confirmed by Starbucks:

"We are long-standing supporters of a culture of diversity, and inclusion and equality for everybody, and I'll share this with our fellow leaders and partners (employees). Thank you very much."

Without a high school grammar teacher as a support staffer, Thurston County Superior Court Judge Thomas McPhee refereed contentious arguments and ruled Tuesday on the language for a proposed ballot on Washington's fledgling same-sex marriage law.

He tossed out the word favored by same-sex marriage foes: "Redefined."

OLYMPIA, Wash. – Over the next few months , someone may approach you with a petition. Opponents of same-sex marriage are trying to force a referendum vote on Washington’s new marriage equality law. There’s also a separate initiative to define marriage as between one man and one woman. Meanwhile, gay rights supporters are also collecting signatures for their own non-binding pledge. Confused?

Let's say a petition gatherer comes up to you. He tells you he’s collecting signatures for Referendum 74, a measure to put same-sex marriage on the ballot in November. I went out and asked a few people if they would sign it.

OLYMPIA, Wash. — Gov. Chris Gregoire has signed into law a bill that legalizes same-sex marriage in Washington state, making it the nation's seventh to allow gay and lesbian couples to wed.

It's a historic moment, but same-sex couples can't walk down the aisle just yet.

The law takes effect June 7, but opponents are already mounting challenges on multiple fronts.

Opponents planned to file a challenge Monday that could put the law on hold pending the outcome of a November vote.

Separately, an initiative was filed at the beginning of the session that opponents of gay marriage say could lead to the new law being overturned.

Gregoire signed the bill Monday morning. It passed the House on Wednesday, a week after Senate approval.
