One of Al Jazeera America's first bureaus will be located in Seattle, the network announced Tuesday. And taking the helm for Pacific Northwest news is former KING 5 reporter and news anchor Allen Schauffler, who said goodbye to local TV news on Friday.

Photos: Time-traveling in the Pacific Northwest

There's nothing like visiting a new landscape to spark the imagination. I just got back from a two-week road trip around the Pacific Northwest region of the U.S. and Canada. And though it was my own country (the non-Canadian part, at least), it felt completely foreign to my eyes, which are accustomed to the swampy, lush Southeast.

When Johnson and Ellen Sheriff Curtis moved their family from Minnesota to Seattle in 1887, two of their teenage sons developed a burgeoning interest in photography.

One of them, Edward Curtis, would go on to become famous for his photographs of Native Americans. But his brother, Asahel Curtis, who worked to less acclaim as a commercial photographer in Seattle, also left behind a remarkable body of work.

Apparently my pronunciation is a dead giveaway that I grew up here in the Northwest.
