Cheeseheads unite! Festival returns to Pike Place for 7th year

The Seattle Cheese Festival is this weekend. Cheese makers from all over the world will be coming to Pike Place Market for this festival featuring delicious yellow and white tidbits of tastiness.

Essentially Ellington again features Seattle-area school jazz bands in New York City

It's another banner year for Seattle-area high school jazz bands. 

Ensembles from Roosevelt and Mountlake Terrace High Schools are once again at Lincoln center in New York, NY - competing in what many critics regard as the nation's top bout for young jazz artists, the Essentially Ellington competition.

The Seattle Times is covering the event and has this note in today's print copy of the  paper:

"On Friday, the competition runs from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with Roosevelt appearing last. There are two segments on Saturday, 7 to 8:30 a.m., with Mountlake Terrace playing last, and 10 a.m. to noon. The three top bands will be announced on the live stream at 1 p. m. (All times PST.)"

Pygmy rabbits face possible last stand in the state

In north central Washington, scientists are trying once again to reintroduce a tiny endangered rabbit species into a big, predator-ridden landscape. Next week, scientists plan to release about 100 young pygmy rabbits, each one the size of a tennis ball.

Name that snake!

An 8 year old male reticulated python (Python reticulatus) is settling into its new home at Seattle's Woodland Park Zoo. The new 100 pound snake needs a name, and you can submit your suggestion via the Zoo's facebook page through May 13 at noon. Zookeepers will select their five favorite names and fans will then vote May 17 on facebook for their top pick.

President Obama's Chief Technology Officer in Seattle

Al-Jazeera and Former Seattle Journalist Deported to Iran

A journalist and formal editorial writer for the Seattle Post-Intelligencer has been deported to Iran after being detained in Syria, the Al Jazeera news service is reporting.

Dorothy Parvaz has been missing since she arrived in Damascus on April 29. Parvaz was working as a journalist for the Al Jazeera English network.
