Happy birthday to the Soul Queen of New Orleans!

Irma Thomas celebrates her 70th birthday today.  She's been enthralling audiences for 50 years now, just as she delighted us with her Studio Session at KPLU last October.

Robin Lloyd will be playing a selection from that session on today's Blue Plate Special starting at noon.

George Shearing 1919-2011

Sad to report the passing of British jazz pianist George Shearing, who died Monday from congestive heart failure in New York. He was 91.

He came to the U.S. in 1947 and quickly established himself as a popular instrumentalist and composer. His recording of "September In The Rain" sold nearly a million copies, and his tune "Lullaby of Birdland" became a popular jazz favorite.

Artscape: A Barn, Some Donkeys and Chamber Music

In addition to chamber music, the Olympic Music Festival offers patrons a chance

It's 24 hours before performance time out here on the Olympic Peninusula, so while the grounds are getting soaked by sprinklers, I walk into a barn being bathed in Mozart.

A string quartet rehearses -- A pair of violinists, a cellist, a violist - all focused on perfecting music written for an intimate setting.
