Ken Griffey Jr. to be inducted into Mariners' Hall of Fame

Ken Griffey Jr. will be inducted into the Seattle Mariners Hall of Fame as its seventh member.

The Mariners announced the induction Tuesday. Griffey's ceremony will take place Aug. 10 before the Mariners face the Milwaukee Brewers.

Griffey spent 13 of his 22 seasons in the majors with the Mariners. He was drafted by Seattle in 1987, made his debut at the major league level two years later and went on to have one of the finest careers in baseball history. Griffey finished with 630 home runs — sixth all-time — and was a 13-time All-Star and the 1997 American League MVP.

M’s out to improve (enviro) average, change peanut packaging

The Mariners might not be topping their league for play this season. But when it comes to sustainability, they say they’ve got a winning team.

Right at the top of the lineup for dealing with trash is a chemical company that has a new formula for packaging the peanuts you buy at the ballpark. It's BASF. Remember the cassette tapes they used to make? The German chemicals giant is a big sponsor now of the Mariners. Local compost producer Cedar Grove is also in on the deal.

27 up, 27 down: Mariners' Felix Hernandez throws perfect game

This is the face of perfection:

The Seattle Mariner's Felix Hernandez is now a part of baseball lore, joining 22 others when he threw a perfect game in a 1-0 win against the Tampa Bay Rays, this afternoon.

That means Hernandez retired 27 batters in a row, throwing 113 pitches, 77 of them strikes. No one got on base.

What's incredible is that this is the third perfect game this season. USA Today reports:

Ben Gibbard, the man behind indie rock darlings Death Cab for Cutie, has been a Seattle Mariners fan since he was five-years-old, and is such an Ichiro Suzuki devotee he wrote a song about the outfielder.
