Bald Eagle: A mighty symbol, but its cry? Not so much

Few sounds symbolize American patriotism like the piercing shrill of a bald eagle. But just like George Washington and his cherry tree, that majestic call … is a myth. The screech associated with the bald eagle, in fact, belongs to a different bird.

Bird expert Connie Stanger blames Hollywood. You know the scene:

Stanger describes it: “You’ve got John Wayne riding through the sunset and you hear the jingle of spurs and often that piercing, loud cry.”

Photos: Zoo's live animal drama encourages kids to get outside

Point Defiance Zoo’s latest outdoor theater show – “Captain Adventure vs. Dr. Do-Nothing: The Quest to Get Outside!” – is a live animal show that follows the journey of a superheroine and her trusty superdog sidekick as they defeat their nemesis, Dr. Do-Nothing.

The show features a variety of native and exotic animals and the chance for audience members to participate. KPLU’s multimedia intern Mallory Kaniss attended one of the shows and brought back the photo gallery below.
