Do free speech rights include the right to carry a backpack?

A case involving protesters, U.S. Army Stryker vehicles and backpacks, that’s right backpacks, is being heard in a federal courtroom in Tacoma.  The civil rights trial comes nearly six years after the actual protests took place at the Port of Tacoma.

George McGovern, an improbable icon of anti-war movement

If George McGovern often seemed miscast as a presidential candidate, he was at least as improbable as an icon of the anti-war movement.

The Vietnam War gave birth to an opposition movement unlike any America had seen in its previous wars. It was young, unconventional and countercultural, defiant of authority and deeply suspicious of government.

McGovern himself was none of these things.

Seattle Protests

Seattle protests grow larger as Portland protesters spend night in tents

Protests in Westlake Park are expected to grow in size Friday and Saturday as labor union members and Afghan war protestors join Occupy Seattle protestors.

Union representatives have visited Westlake Park and voiced their support for Occupy Seattle protesters.

Anti-war protesters sentenced for breaking into Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor

Five peace activists who broke into Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor have been sentenced to prison.  The group cut through fences at the Trident submarine base on November 2, 2009 to reach an area near where nuclear warheads are stored.  Bangor is the largest nuclear weapons storehouse in the United States.

At a trial in Tacoma in December, the Bangor trespassers, also known as the "Bangor Five," were found guilty of conspiracy and destruction of federal  property.

How important is a protest sign?

How important is a protest sign?  That’s the question we’re asking on the 8th anniversary of the war in Iraq.

Back in 2003,  in the weeks and months leading up to the invasion of Iraq by the U.S. and Coalition forces, millions of peace activists around the globe rallied against war. 

At every protest you saw the same signs-- red, white and blue placards with the words “No Iraq War.”  All of them came from one place, a family run sign shop in Seattle.
