Will alcohol policies help WSU finally shed its image?

Last October, a freshman at Washington State University passed out after consuming hard liquor and an energy drink. The student later died in the hospital. His blood alcohol level was about five times the legal limit.

That led to some soul-searching on the campus in Pullman, Wash.

It turns out an average of 200 students each year end up in the ER at Pullman Regional Hospital for alcohol poisoning and alcohol-related injuries.

Four Loko will now make clear they're loaded with alcohol

Cans of the popular flavored malt beverage Four Loko will soon sport an "Alcohol Facts" label to make it plain they pack a potent punch.

The changes are part of a final settlement announced Tuesday between the Federal Trade Commission and Phusion Projects, whose products have been blamed for hospitalizations and deaths among young people.

Washington is now the third state to ban the potent alcohol and caffeine beverages, including brands such as Four Loko.  The so-called 'energy' cocktails have come under fire after numerous incidents involving young adults treated for alcohol poisoning.

Washington Bans Alcohol Energy Drinks

Washington state is banning alcoholic energy drinks. The state Liquor Control Board adopted the new rule this morning. The ban takes effect next week, on November 18th.

It comes after nine Central Washington University students were hospitalized after a party last month. Authorities say they drank the caffeinated malt liquor beverage Four Loko.

Governor Chris Gregoire will hold a news conference after this morning's state Liquor Control Board meeting on alcoholic energy drinks.  The board is considering a ban on the drinks, like Four Loko, which played a role in sending nine Central Washington University students to a hospital last month after a party, as KPLU reported.
