KPLU SCHOOL OF JAZZ IS BACK IN SESSION
“Volume 3” CD available April 17

In 2005, as part of its continuing support of music education in the schools, KPLU developed a mentoring program involving bands from 10 high schools and one middle school, and the participation of 11 local jazz professionals. The fruits of this partnership yielded KPLU School of Jazz. The CD project was made possible through a grant from The Boeing Company.

Due to the success of the inaugural School of Jazz project – to the tune of over $18,000 raised – Boeing renewed its grant in 2006, culminating in the release of KPLU School of Jazz - Volume 2 in April 2006, focusing exclusively on high school jazz bands including all of the high school bands who participated in the 2005 project, as well as two newcomers to the project.

KPLU School of Jazz – Volume 3, to be released April 17, 2007, features some of the same high school jazz bands and introduces three newcomers to the project. The complete list of 2007 participants: Stadium High School (Tacoma), North Thurston High School (Olympia), Kentridge High School (Kent), Roosevelt High School (Seattle), Squalicum High School (Bellingham), Mercer Island High School (Mercer Island), Newport High School (Bellevue), Shorewood High School (Shoreline), Mountlake Terrace High School (Mountlake Terrace), Inglemoor High School (Bothell), Edmonds Woodway High School (Edmonds), and Garfield High School (Seattle).

Guests artists included on KPLU School of Jazz – Volume 3: Lance Buller, Thomas Marriott, David Joyner, Darren Motamedy, Gary Shutes, Steve Korn, Dave Keim, Michael Brockman, David Marriott, Brad Allison, Mark Taylor, and Travis Ranney. KPLU School of Jazz - Volume 3 will be available in retail outlets on April 17. All proceeds benefit Western Washington school music programs. KPLU thanks The Boeing Company, Verity Credit Union, the Red Kelly Jazz Foundation, and Cornish College of the Arts for their generous support of this year’s project.
