Weekend Forecast: Still Some Rain Ahead, But Mother’s Day Will Be Lovely

May 9, 2014

“First things first,” said KPLU weather expert Cliff Mass. “For Mother’s Day, it looks good.”

Mass predicts sunny skies and temperatures of at least 70 “and maybe even into the low 70s” for Sunday.

But before then, there’s some rain to get through.

Rain And Possible Thunderstorms Friday

“Today we have a showery regime,” said Mass, who teaches atmospheric sciences at the University of Washington. He says a front has gone by, so there are showers in the mountains.

“And I’m afraid there’s going to be a Puget Sound convergence zone — in fact, a strong one,” Mass said, adding it will set up somewhere between north Seattle and Everett. “So, it’s going to rain up there and it could rain hard.”

Mass says there could even be a few thunderstorms on Friday as the sun heats up the surface and the air becomes more unstable.

“So, a showery day, rain in the north Sound,” Mass said.

Then, Friday night, things will start improving.

Sunbreaks Saturday And Transition To Warmer Temps

“The upper level trough that’s giving us some of this rain will move through" as a ridge starts to develop, said Mass.

Saturday will be the transition day, he says, predicting some clouds and some showers in the mountains.

“But the lowlands should get sunny,” Mass said. So, on Saturday, expect sunbreaks as the showers will back out in the late morning or early afternoon.

“So, not too bad on Saturday, and temperatures will get into the upper 60s, perhaps. Certainly the mid-60s tomorrow,” said Mass.

Sunday Lives Up To Its Name

Just in time for Mother’s Day, Mass says a ridge will develop and stick around for several days.

“And that’s going to bring sunny skies and warmer conditions, from Sunday all the way at least 'til Tuesday,” Mass said.

He says that means Sunday’s temps will be at least 70 and maybe even reach the low 70s. “So a really good day for Mother, good for going out for that walk in the park or whatever you like to do,” Mass said.

And he says you can expect those warm temps to stick around for at least a few days.

“So a pretty favorable forecast, once we get through tonight and Saturday,” Mass said.
