UW has more seats for in-state applicants in 2012

The University of Washington says it will have more room for in-state students in this fall's freshman class.

This gift for the class of 2012 comes from the Legislature and the fact that UW has received fewer applications from freshmen hopefuls.

The Legislature is requiring the university to enroll 4,000 in-state freshmen on its Seattle campus this fall. That's 150 more than last year. But the university says it will admit at least 300 more Washington students because not everyone will decide to attend.

UW admissions director Philip Ballinger tells The Seattle Times (http://is.gd/N8YvId ) the university has received about 9,300 in-state applications. That's about a thousand fewer than last year.

Students hoping to go to UW will have to wait until March to find out if they made the cut. That's when acceptance letters will be mailed.
