Supermarket self-check: Raising convenience or blood pressure?

Definitely the BP in my case but I'm a confirmed Luddite, anyway.   I can be accused of malfeasance right at home by my wife.  I don't need to go to the supermarket to hear it from a snooty machine.

In this week's Food for Thought my unindicted co-conspirator Nancy Leson who actually likes self-check machines wonders if they offer an opportunity to thieves.  According to a story in USA Today they sure do.

For me, these self-scanners are just another brick in the wall of electronic annoyances muscling their way into what used to be human-to-human transactions.  The bright side: They don't ask me what my plans are for the weekend.  Not yet, anyway.
