Animation shows workings of temporary bridge span

May 31, 2013

The state Department of Transportation has shared an animation of the temporary bridge span that will be installed in place of the collapsed Interstate 5 bridge in Mount Vernon.

The animation was put together by Acrow Bridges, the New Jersey-based company building the 160-foot span.

This week, crews began removing the mangled steel, crumpled pavement and cars that fell into the Skagit River when the span of highway collapsed on May 23.

Gov. Jay Inslee announced Sunday that the state plans to have temporary spans built and installed on the bridge in about three weeks, but before that work begins, the remaining spans must clear inspection.

WSDOT hopes the job can be completed by mid-June to reopen two lanes in each direction on the vital trade and tourism route between Seattle and Vancouver, British Columbia.

Drivers can circumvent the collapsed bridge using detours and alternate routes
