KPLU Multimedia Manager Justin Steyer facilitates management of Pacific Public Media’s online and mobile content while implementing new and improved systems and platforms. Additionally, he is responsible for creative user interaction and involvement, as he actively works to improve service to the audience and support for our new media activities.

Before joining the KPLU staff in 2009, Steyer worked as a Web Producer for The Seattle Times; prior to that, he was responsible for photography, video and online content at The Bellingham Herald and worked in the capacity as editor and photographer at other Western Washington publications. In 2007, Steyer was awarded the Mark of Excellence by the Society of Professional Journalists in the area of sports photography.

How Meditation Is Changing Monroe's Maximum-Security Inmates

Seven maximum-security inmates sit in a room with their eyes closed, not making a sound.

Shackles bind their hands and feet, confining them to a metal chair bolted to the ground. A guard stands nearby. Yells and clanks from the hallway stray in through the open door.

This is what meditation class at the Monroe Correctional Complex looks like. The students, murderer and rapists among them, listen as volunteer teacher Cathy Iacobazzi walks them through a practice session.

Forty years ago, a band called Eleventh House helped set the standard for what would become known as Jazz-Rock Fusion.  The band consisted of Larry Coryell (guitar), Alphonse Mouzon (drums), Mike Mandel (keyboards), Danny Trifan (bass) and Randy Brecker (trumpet).  

On this leg of the Eleventh House Reunion Tour, Mandel couldn’t make the gig so Larry brought in one of Seattle’s finest pianists, Marc Seales, to fill in. 

As you’ll hear in this performance, Marc more than holds his own.
