Southern vocal music comes to Mercer Island

For Sacred Harp singing, the Pacific Northwest is home to a small but dedicated following. The unique vocal style comes from the south, originating in rural parts of Georgia and Alabama. This weekend, singers from around the northwest will be gathering on Mercer Island.

Stanley Smith, from Ozark Alabama, says the music grabbed him at a young age.

Blind in Seattle take strolls in a (nearly) secret garden

At Ethel L. Dupar’s Fragrant Garden a collection of plants is growing for visitors to experience through smell and touch, senses that usually come second to our primarily visual take on plants. The garden is a part of Lighthouse for the Blind, a non-profit serving Seattle’s blind community.

Pro skateboarding comes to KeyArena this weekend

This weekend some of the world’s best skateboarders are competing at Key Arena for nearly half a million dollars in the Street League Skateboarding Pro Tour. 

Competitors at the event will be judged on the style, difficulty and originality of their tricks and stunts.  The organizer is Rob Dyrdek, a former pro-skateboarder, who says he’ll also be giving $75,000 and materials from this weekend’s competition to Roxhill Park in West Seattle.
