Vancouver, B.C. comes in 5th on Mercer's 2011 Quality of Living survey, while Seattle is ranked at 48 (just below New York City).

Jazz great Chick Corea to perform live in rare studio session

On the heels of a nearly month-long celebration of his 70th birthday at the Blue Note in New York City (which included performances with ten different bands and 30 musicians) legendary jazz pianist Chick Corea will offer a rare opportunity for radio listeners tomorrow afternoon on KPLU.

At 12:15 p.m. Pacific Time Corea will be joining Kevin Kniestedt in the KPLU Seattle performance studio for a live interview and solo piano performance. This is a real treat for us as Corea so rarely offers performances of this type.

Dirty dome, budget cuts blamed for Washington Capitol leaks

The state's Capitol dome is leaking and budget cuts have been blamed.

OLYMPIA, Wash. — A dirty dome is blamed for leaks at the Capitol in Olympia.

State Department of Enterprise Services spokesman Jim Erskine says with cleaning postponed by budget cuts, it's possible mold and grime are widening cracks in the mortar and allowing water into the building.

Just a day after firing Paul Wulff, who had the job for four years, Washington State University has hired Mike Leach to be its new head football coach.

Leach is the former coach of Texas Tech University. KPLU sports commentator Art Thiel says he's an offensive wizard who's had his share of controversy.

Health clinics for the poor look to middle class for income

Clinics and hospitals that serve low-income people are holding candle-light vigils in Seattle, Yakima and Spokane this week to draw attention to proposed budget cuts they call devastating. After education, the second biggest slice of the state budget goes to health care, totaling about a third of the general fund.

Some community clinics are taking the desperate step of marketing themselves to people with private insurance. That's a big change for non-profits with a mission to serve the poor.

For the past few years, the travel site Expedia has conducted a survey about the world's vacation habits and like in years past, this year's survey found that the United States is one of the countries that gives its workers fewer vacation days and one of the countries in which workers leave the most number of vacation days unused.

'Tis the season for burn bans

The Puget Sound Clean Air Agency has issued its first burn ban of the season.

A large ridge of high pressure off the Pacific coast is bringing stagnant air conditions to the region.

A Stage 1 burn ban goes into effect at 5 p.m. today for Pierce and Snohomish counties and will stay in effect until further notice.

Gov. Gregoire wants DEA to reclassify marijuana

Efforts to decriminalize marijuana just took a big step today.

Olympia, Wash. — Gov. Chris Gregoire and Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee have filed a petition with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration asking the agency to reclassify marijuana so that doctors can prescribe it and pharmacists can fill the prescription.
