(Seattle-Tacoma) Now listeners in Olympia can hear KPLU - NPR News and All That Jazz - much clearer on its new signal serving Olympia at 90.1 FM (KPLI).
Olympia represents a significant listening area for KPLU, which employs a full-time reporter to cover the state capitol. The expanded service allows KPLU to provide more service to the area, reaching Olympia's 60,000 residents and up to 130,000 people in the outlying areas. KPLU bought the frequency from TVW cable television in March 2005.
In March 2006, KPLU received a $50,000 grant from Puget Sound Energy to boost its broadcast signal in Olympia. The station's antenna and transmitter are located on the Raad Building in downtown Olympia. The Olympia expansion project is a major component of KPLU's Capital Campaign: Straight Ahead, a $5 million initiative to build KPLU's capacity through a new broadcast center on the campus of Pacific Lutheran University.
"Expansion initiatives are an important part of KPLU's ongoing commitment and leadership toward extending public radio to the region," says Kerry Swanson, KPLU Interim General Manager. "Our listeners in the Olympia area told us KPLU's unique blend of jazz, blues and news programming is important to them. We listened and made this investment to serve them better. We are pleased to be able to provide this clearer signal and look forward to welcoming new listeners."
Celebrating 40 years of service to the community and ranked as one of the most popular radio stations in the nation, KPLU - NPR News and All That Jazz - is listener-supported and provides local and National Public Radio news, and jazz and blues on 88.5 in Seattle/Tacoma, 89.3 in Port Angeles/Victoria, 90.1 in Olympia and other communities in its signal network, which has the largest footprint in the Northwest. KPLU has one of the most listened-to websites in the world at www.kplu.org, and a 24-hour world class jazz stream available at our new jazz website, Jazz24.org. KPLU and Jazz24 are also available at 88.5 on HD Radio. KPLU is a community service of Pacific Lutheran University.
