“Jazz DJ by day, courageous crime fighter by night. From the makers of Toxic Black Sludge and the hometown folks at Foaming Meadows Arrested Housing Development – it’s time once more for another astonishing adventure from the rasping files of …Jimmy Jazzoid, DJ Detective…”

Thus begins Jimmy Jazzoid and the Squid-Lord from Space, the second radio musical penned by 88.5 KPLU morning jazz host Dick Stein, a follow-up to last year’s sold-out live presentation of Jimmy Jazzoid and the Death Beak of Ballard. This year’s production of Jimmy Jazzoid will be performed before a studio audience at Seattle’s Museum of History & Industry and broadcast live Tuesday night, October 30, at 8. KPLU will re-broadcast the show on Halloween at noon.

When a flying saucer lands in the middle of Safeco Field during the Mariners vs. Marmots game and a menacing nine-foot alien “Disco Squid” emerges wearing a silver lamé spacesuit and Lucite platform shoes, hell-bent on seeking Earth women and the formula for the life-changing Piña Colada, Jimmy (played by Stein) engages once more in the triumph of hope over experience to save the day. He’s aided and abetted by Glamorous Gal About Town, Nancy Gleason (played by Seattle Times restaurant critic and columnist, and KPLU food commentator Nancy Leson). Long-time Seattle radio personality and KPLU host John Maynard plays the Squid-Lord.

In addition, Jimmy Jazzoid features various KPLU personalities including Robin Lloyd (reprising her role as the floozy with a heart of stainless steel, Moistella Culatello), Nick Morrison, Dave Meyer, and Gary Davis. Also featured are jazz vocalist Greta Matassa and her band, the vocal group “The Fabulous Fenderskirts,” live sound effects, and Tim Hart playing the Theremin onstage.

Stein is issuing the same disclaimer he offered prior to last year’s production: “A registered nurse will be on duty in the lobby.”

Interview and photo opportunities are available. KPLU thanks Whole Foods Market, Portage Bay Café & Catering, and the Seattle Channel for their support.
