KPLU's Holiday Specials 2009

88.5 KPLU continues its holiday tradition of presenting a number of Christmas and New Year's Eve specials, including a re-broadcast of the KPLU Christmas Jam live concert.  The complete schedule is as follows:

 

Christmas Day - Friday, December 25

9 to 10 a.m.

"Jonathan Winters' A Christmas Carol."  A KPLU tradition.  Comedian Jonathan Winters presents a distinctive reading of Dickens' holiday classic.  Winters voices all of the characters.



10 to 11 a.m."Tinsel Tales: NPR Christmas Favorites" hosted by NPR's Lynn Neary.  Hear stories that touch on the meaning of Christmas from NPR commentators which include David Sedaris (Santa Land Diaries), Bailey White, and John Henry Faulk.

11 to 11:30 a.m."A Car Talk Christmas Carol Redux" starring Tom and Ray Magliozzi and a cast of public radio personalities including Robert Siegel, Ira Glass, Daniel Pinkwater, and Carl Kasell.

11:30 a.m. to 12 noonKPLU plays a selection of Christmas jazz.

12 noon to 1 p.m.13th Annual KPLU Christmas Jam live concert (re-broadcast) featuring jazz vocalist Sara Gazarek and Pacific Lutheran University's Jazz Ensemble under the direction of Dr. David Deacon-Joyner.

1 to 2 p.m."Jazz Piano Christmas," live from the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.  Enjoy original and unique jazz interpretations of holiday favorites performed by Dr. Billy Taylor, Ramsey Lewis, Patricia Barber and Eldar.

2 to 3 p.m.KPLU plays a selection of Christmas jazz.


New Year's Eve - Thursday, December 31, 8 p.m. to 12:30 a.m.

Join KPLU for a swinging New Year's Eve as we travel coast to coast for live jazz celebrations.  The party features:
  • 8 p.m. The Bad Plus at the Village Vanguard in New York.
  • 9:15 p.m. Irvin Mayfield Quintet at the Dakota Jazz Club in Minneapolis.  Mayfield is a rising trumpet star.
  • 10:30 p.m. Big Bad Voodoo Daddy from L.A.'s Walt Disney Concert Hall.
