polio http://www.kplu.org en Bill Gates: Push polio into oblivion http://www.kplu.org/post/bill-gates-push-polio-oblivion <p>In case you missed it, Bill Gates thinks we should eradicate polio.</p><p>Not just him. You and me, too.</p><p>Bill and Melinda Gates have given a lot of money — about $1.3 billion — in support of the global campaign to eradicate polio. But, as Gates has been saying a lot the past week, it’s going to <a href="http://www.npr.org/blogs/health/2011/01/31/133368934/gates-calls-for-more-money-to-stamp-out-polio" target="_blank">take a truly global effort to succeed</a>:</p><blockquote><p>“If eradication fails because of a lack of generosity on the part of donor countries it would be tragic. We are so close, but we have to finish the last leg of the journey,” says Gates in his <a href="http://www.gatesfoundation.org/annual-letter/2011/Pages/home.aspx" target="_blank">annual letter</a> released today.</p></blockquote><p>Gates has been on the global media circuit for the past week or so stumping for polio eradication. He wants the public everywhere to push their governments to provide more funds for this <a href="http://www.polioeradication.org/" target="_blank">big global project</a>.</p><p>Gates made the case early last week when he announced his <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748703293204576105921441596278.html?mod=googlenews_wsj" target="_blank">$50 million donation (matched by an Abu Dhabi crown prince</a>) to boost the vaccination campaign in Pakistan and Afghanistan, two of the four countries (the others being India and Nigeria) where polio is still endemic.</p><p><strong><a href="http://humanosphere.kplu.org/2011/01/bill-gates-pushing-us-to-push-polio-into-oblivion/">Read more Mon, 31 Jan 2011 23:12:03 +0000 Tom Paulson 677 at http://www.kplu.org Bill Gates: Push polio into oblivion Bill Gates gives, and gets, more money for polio eradication http://www.kplu.org/post/bill-gates-gives-and-gets-more-money-polio-eradication <p>Bill and Melinda Gates are&nbsp;<a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/thereporters/ferguswalsh/2011/01/melinda_gates_and_immunisation.html" style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; font-size: 14px; vertical-align: baseline; background-image: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; background-color: transparent; color: rgb(51, 102, 204); text-decoration: none; font-weight: bold; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; " target="_blank">big believers in vaccines</a>&nbsp;and in the benefit of eradicating, rather than simply controlling, those human diseases that have the potential for being completely wiped out.</p><p style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-style: initial; border-color: initial; outline-width: 0px; outline-style: initial; outline-color: initial; font-size: 14px; vertical-align: baseline; background-image: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; background-color: transparent; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; ">Today, Gates and British Prime Minister David Cameron announced&nbsp;<a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-01-28/gates-u-k-boost-polio-funding-to-speed-end-of-crippling-virus.html" style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; font-size: 14px; vertical-align: baseline; background-image: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; background-color: transparent; color: rgb(51, 102, 204); text-decoration: none; font-weight: bold; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; " target="_blank">a combined new donation of $166 million&nbsp;</a>in support of the global polio eradication campaign.</p><p style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-style: initial; border-color: initial; outline-width: 0px; outline-style: initial; outline-color: initial; font-size: 14px; vertical-align: baseline; background-image: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; background-color: transparent; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; "><a href="http://humanosphere.kplu.org/2011/01/bill-gates-gives-and-gets-more-money-for-polio-eradication-while-at-davos/">Read more</a></p><p style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-style: initial; border-color: initial; outline-width: 0px; outline-style: initial; outline-color: initial; font-size: 14px; vertical-align: baseline; background-image: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; background-color: transparent; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; "> Fri, 28 Jan 2011 22:05:44 +0000 Tom Paulson 669 at http://www.kplu.org Bill Gates gives, and gets, more money for polio eradication
