KPLU wins national SPJ award for pot legalization series

KPLU has won the 2012 Sigma Delta Chi Award for Public Service in Radio Journalism (SPJ) for “If it’s legal: Five ways pot could affect your life.” Sigma Delta Chi Award winners will be honored at a banquet on June 21 at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. Judges selected this year’s winners from over 1,700 entries in categories covering print, radio, television and online. The awards recognize outstanding work published or broadcast in 2012. The contest is open to all United States media outlets. This marks the second time KPLU has won a national SPJ award.

KPLU has garnered a 2013 Regional Edward R. Murrow Award from the Radio Television Digital News Association (RTNDA). The award for Best Audio News Series is in recognition of the KPLU News team’s 2012 pre-election series, “If it’s legal: Five ways legal pot could affect your life.”

Girl Scouts are stuck on Dick Stein

KPLU's Midday Jazz Host Dick Stein is one smart cookie. And his ideas aren’t half-baked, either.

Stein was honored today by the Girl Scouts of Western Washington on the Pacific Lutheran University campus for coming up with a good idea that really stuck.

Like thousands of other Western Washington residents, Stein buys Girl Scout Cookies every year.

Geriatric sea otter takes it to the hoop at Oregon Zoo

Eddie the otter has been trained to dunk a basketball through a small plastic hoop. It's an exercise a veterinarian recommended for his arthritic elbows.

Tonight on KPLU: The SFJAZZ Center's historic opening concert

Thirty years after presenting its first concerts in San Francisco, the organization SFJAZZ has built a permanent home and performance venue. The SFJAZZ Center, conceived as the first stand-alone building for jazz in the U.S., opens with a star-studded concert tonight, hosted by Bill Cosby.

Artists include: McCoy Tyner, Chick Corea, Esperanza Spalding, Joshua Redman, Joe Lovano, Bobby Hutcherson, Mary Stallings, John Handy, Pete Escovedo, Eric Reed, and more!
